Barnag
The surroundings of Hungary's Lake Balaton are teeming with young winemaking projects that share a low-impact philosophy. In 2017, the small winery grand vin de Barnag, founded by Bence Szilágyi, was also born on the north-eastern side of the lake. His father moved to this area from Hamburg, after which he also started making wine in his spare time. Bence couldn't do it and decided to make the first small batch (about 400 bottles) in his own way - without additives. This style worked for him, so he gradually leased more land, from which he now produces up to 20 thousand. bottles per year. Bence tries not to spray the vineyards, which are all located on a clay-limestone subsoil, with any conventional sprays, but prefers natural-based preparations. In the cellar, he leads the way "nothing in, nothing out", so all his wines are spontaneously fermented, unclarified, unfiltered and bottled without the addition of sulphur. Bence also likes to experiment with maceration for red wines - he leaves the grapes whole or only slightly disturbed, sometimes adding directly pressed cider to them. You will come across typical Hungarian varieties, most often Furmint, Riesling or Frankovka, in addition to releasing a number of fun blends. We like the wines to have energy, fruitiness and sparkle, which the wines from Barnago exactly fulfill.
